Dr. Peter Cohen takes an innovative approach to educational leadership, utilizing team building and technology to transform schools and inspire teachers to ensure that all students are on a path to become career or college ready.
A public school educator for over 20 years in Massachusetts, Dr. Cohen is currently Principal of Cyrus Peirce Middle School on the island of Nantucket. He uses his collaborative, decisive, and transparent leadership style to develop progressive professional development models, empower teachers, and support creative, project based learning.
His passion for innovation is demonstrated through his doctoral research and his implementation of a 1:1 technology initiative that has enabled universal access to technology for a diverse student body.
In addition to leadership, teaching, and curriculum development, Dr. Cohen has spearheaded the transition to a fully integrated standard-based learning environment. Dr. cohen has mentored teachers through the process of unpacking standards, identifying power-standards, developing units of study, and aligning assessments to measure progress towards mastery.
Prior to learning and leading 30 miles out to sea, Dr. Cohen served seven years as the middle school principal in Westford, MA, and ten years as a history teacher and team leader in Lexington, MA.
He received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and his Master of Arts in Teaching degree, as well as his C.A.G.S. certification in educational leadership, from Simmons College. He earned his Doctorate from Boston College, where his research focused on the impact of leadership by school superintendents on large-scale technology initiatives in public schools.
In addition to his work as an educator, Dr. Cohen is also a regular presenter at EdCamp professional development conferences and is a member of the Project for School Innovation. In 2014, he represented the Chinese Bridge Delegation through the College Board on a leadership trip across China. He is an active member of The Nantucket Project Alumni Circle.
